Content:

The first part of the course concentrates on our text book. However it is not text book based and the exam cannot be done well without attending the explanations and discussions in class.

The subject matter is The Media and how English is used in The Media. It has a particular relevance for Political Science students due to the fact that Politics is, probably, the largest and most important aspect represented in The Media. Politics also has a direct influence on many other aspects represented in The Media.

Here we discover how narrative, representation and codes are incorporated into all media texts.

The second part of the course is the analyses of a few well known Political Speeches. These speeches may change year to year.

Here we discover and study how metaphor is a basic element in everyday language and how it is a fundamental part in the composition of political speeches and Media texts. We also learn about intertextuality. How Media texts frequently refer to each other.

The third part of the course is on News Production. How the News is produced, what the criteria are, how it is chosen and how it is represented in the media.
