LANGUAGE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTRE (CLA) IN SIENA
The University Language Centre (ULC, CLA in Italian) offers courses in English, French, German, Spanish, and other languages, open to all students at the University. Classes take place at the San Niccolò and Piazza San Francesco campuses (beyond Arezzo campus), and many courses are delivered in a blended format, combining in-person lessons with online activities on the e-learning platform.
These courses allow students to:
- prepare for CEFR levels A1–C2 (depending on each language’s offer) and take the language proficiency tests required by their degree programmes;
- strengthen their general language skills, which are also useful for curricular language exams.
For students on the European Studies programmes, advanced English courses can be particularly helpful in developing the communicative competences required throughout the degree.
It is useful to distinguish between:
- CLA Courses (taught by CEL – language instructors)
These courses are taught by Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL – language instructors). They usually focus on practical activities such as exercises, conversation practice, and the development of receptive and productive skills. They are open to all students, often in blended mode, and are designed to consolidate general language competences and prepare students for proficiency tests. Classes take place at San Niccolò and Piazza San Francesco, often offered in a blended format, combining in-person classes with online activities.
- Curricular Courses (taught by the DISPI Department language professors)
These are official 42-hour courses (6 ECTS) taught by the department’s language professors. They focus on specific linguistic and rhetorical skills aligned with each degree programme and include formal assessment. Classes are held in person at the Mattioli campus. Classes taught by DISPI language professors follow the standard procedures of curricular university courses.
Attending CEL courses is an excellent opportunity to reinforce language foundations and support autonomous study. Likewise, taking the curricular courses offered by DISPI professors is essential in preparing for degree-specific language exams and developing competences tailored to one’s academic pathway.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
For non-Italian-speaking students who wish to improve their Italian, the CLA offers several learning opportunities:
- For absolute beginners, the online Italian A1 self-study course with tutoring is available.

CLA and DISPI language courses are free of charge for students who are up to date with university fees.
OPPORTUNITÀ DI CORSI LINGUISTICI CON IL CLA (CENTRO LINGUISTICO DI ATENEO) A SIENA
Il CLA (Centro linguistico di Ateneo) offre corsi di inglese, francese, tedesco, spagnolo e altre lingue aperti a tutte/i le/gli studentesse e studenti, presso le sedi di San Niccolò e Piazza San Francesco, oltre che Arezzo. Molti corsi sono in modalità blended, con lezioni in presenza e attività online sulla piattaforma e-learning.
I corsi permettono di:
- prepararsi ai diversi livelli QCER (A1–C2, secondo l’offerta di ciascuna lingua) e sostenere gli eventuali esami di idoneità previsti dai piani di studio;
- rafforzare le competenze linguistiche utili anche per affrontare gli esami curricolari.
Per le/gli studentesse e studenti di European Studies, in particolare, i corsi di inglese avanzato possono supportare lo sviluppo delle competenze comunicative richieste dal percorso.
È utile distinguere tra:
- Corsi del CLA (CEL)
Sono tenuti dalle/dai Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici (CEL) e offrono attività tecnico-pratiche: esercitazioni, conversazione, potenziamento delle abilità ricettive e produttive. Sono aperti a tutte/i, spesso in modalità blended, e servono a consolidare le competenze linguistiche generali e a prepararsi agli eventuali esami di idoneità previsti nel percorso di studi. Le lezioni si tengono a San Niccolò e in Piazza San Francesco, spesso in forma blended.
- Corsi curricolari del DISPI (docenti di lingue del DISPI)
Sono insegnamenti ufficiali da 42 ore (6 CFU), tenuti dalle/dai docenti di lingua del dipartimento. Sviluppano competenze linguistiche e retoriche specifiche, mirate al profilo del corso di studi, e includono una valutazione formale. Le lezioni si svolgono in presenza presso il presidio Mattioli. Le lezioni delle/dei docenti di lingue del DISPI seguono le modalità ordinarie degli insegnamenti universitari curricolari.
Frequentare i corsi delle/dei CEL è quindi un’ottima occasione per rafforzare le basi linguistiche e sostenere lo studio autonomo. Allo stesso modo, partecipare ai corsi di lingua del DISPI è fondamentale per prepararsi agli esami curricolari e sviluppare competenze linguistiche mirate al proprio curriculum.
