Prof. Giovanni Minnucci

Professor Giovanni Minnucci is a historian of medieval and modern law, a subject he taught as a full professor at the University of Siena (1999-2024). 
At our university, he has held numerous positions, including Vice-Rector, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science, Department Director, elected member of the Academic Senate, and President of the “Circolo Giuridico” Library Council.
He is the author of over 140 publications, including 15 monographs and editions of sources and works, in critical text, of medieval and modern legal literature. In relation to the historical periods mentioned above, he has studied the following research topics in particular: a) the history of universities, with particular reference to the University of Siena; b) the legal status of women; c) the history of canon law; d) the history of criminal and procedural law;  e) the history of marriage; f) the life and works of the reformed jurist Alberico Gentili – one of the founding fathers of modern international law – of whom he has published numerous texts and unpublished works.

He is President (editor-in-chief) of the Scientific Committee of the series ‘Quaderni del Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche e Internazionali’ (Notebooks of the Department of Political and International Sciences); He is a member of the editorial boards of Italian and foreign journals and scientific societies; he has participated with his own reports in numerous conferences both in Italy and abroad, and has given numerous lectures and book presentations; he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Medieval Canon Law and the Robbins Collection at the University of California, Berkeley, USA (1982-1983); he was Associate Professor in his discipline: in the Faculty of Law at the University of Perugia (1992-1995); in the Faculties of Law (1995-1997) and Political Science (1997-1999) at the University of Siena.
He has also held a number of positions outside the university, including that of Rector of the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena (2022-2025): a very ancient foundation (1190) that looks after the historical and artistic heritage of the Cathedral Monumental Complex.
On 1 November 2024, he was appointed senior lecturer in the Department of Political and International Sciences (formerly the Faculty of Political Sciences); shortly afterwards, on 27 December 2024, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, conferred upon him, by decree, the honour of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
