From 28 August 2026, for one month – “Circolo Giuridico” Law and Political Science Library – Via Mattioli 10, Siena
From 28 August 2026, the Rare Books Room of the “Circolo Giuridico” Law and Political Science Library will host a month-long exhibition dedicated to Ugo Grozio, regarded as one of the founders of modern international law.
Organised to mark the anniversary of his death, the exhibition presents a valuable edition of De iure belli ac pacis, the Dutch jurist’s most famous work, first published in 1625.
The copy held by the Library, published in Utrecht in three volumes between 1696 and 1703, is an important commented and philologically enriched edition of the work. The text includes commentaries by Willem van der Muelen, Grozio’s own annotations and notes by Johann Friedrich Gronovius.
The exhibition is promoted by the Board of the “Circolo Giuridico” Library – Professor Massimiliano Guderzo, Professor Gianfranco Orlando and Dr Francesco Poesini – with the participation of Professor Tiziana Ferreri, Associate Professor of Medieval and Modern Legal History at the Department of Political and International Sciences.
